JM: Hi Lowbeezy, it’s great to meet you! Thanks for taking the time to put together this week’s F&F playlist. Would you mind starting off by telling us a little about yourself and about the music you chose?

LB: Hey Jackie, sure. I go by Lowbeezy aka Lowbudget, I’m from Philadelphia, and I’m a DJ. For my F&F playlist most of what I picked are 80s dance with some indie dance and yacht rock. All of these songs just make me feel good. They’re almost all upbeat and have great melodies to sing along to. They’re also all very familiar to me-songs that just never seem to get old. That’s what I like in the morning. Usually I’m having my coffee before I go to the gym and these songs just put me in a great mood!

JM: That’s amazing! I definitely felt that vibe and was shoulder bopping from the start. So you’ve done some really fun stuff in your DJ career! I saw that you founded the Hollertronix parties with Diplo in Philly, your mixtape was a NY Times Top 10 Album, and you also toured with MIA as her DJ and Musical Director. Don’t judge me, but I definitely do finger guns almost 100% of the time when I hear Paper Planes and they do the gunshots… You also hosted a podcast for a while called America’s Realest DJs!

LB: I definitely like to keep busy with my music and creativity in general. And yes I do judge you haha.

JM: It’s ok I judge me about that too just a little bit. So bringing it back to coffee. How do you usually take it?

LB: Always black. I grew up in a cream and sugar household and kept it that way for years. I started drinking my coffee black as a way to cut calories, which kinda forced me to seek out quality coffee.

JM: I hear you on that! Quality coffee is a must when drinking it black. So what would you say your usual morning routine looks like?

LB: The first thing I do is head to the kitchen and start grinding whatever coffee beans I have. I live across the street from a coffee shop so good beans are always close by. BRL Kiss of Life is also a new favorite. After I get them brewing, I drink a big glass of water and take some vitamins. As I drink my coffee I’ll cue up a bunch of YouTube videos, usually current events, politics and motivational stuff.

JM: Kiss of Life! That was my first BRL favorite too. I think I’m more of a Chanel girl now. Well that’s a really great way to start the day -- positive and productive. When did you actually start drinking coffee?

LB: I feel like college was when I started. My parents always were making it, so it was there. I would say it wasn’t until my 30s that I actually started to appreciate coffee as more than just a means of waking up.

JM: Gotta love that worldly wisdom that hits in your 30s. Drink water after a night out before bed, pay for movers, quit drinking trash coffee lol. So looking back even further, do you have any coffee related childhood memories?

LB: Haha yes! It’s actually such a silly thing, but for some reason it has remained in the consciousness of my family for decades. I would say sometime in the 90s, my older cousin was at the supermarket. He came back and relayed the story of how he was really excited that he had found some good coffee on sale. While waiting in line he told the guy behind him about the sale, and how good the coffee was. To my cousin’s disappointment, the guy grumpily responded “coffee’s coffee”. To this day, whenever coffee is mentioned at a family gathering, someone (usually me) will mockingly yell out “coffee’s coffee” and everyone will laugh as if it hasn’t been said 1000 times already.

JM: I love that! Well when you’re not on your usual daily grind and setting up for a productive day, what's your favorite thing to do on a day off?

LB: I like to go for long walks, eat with friends, kickbox, stare into space, I’m easily entertained.

JM: Yeah being easily entertained is amazing. I feel like I’m the same and it served me well throughout quarantine! Well I appreciate you taking the time to chat with me today. As we bring this Q&A to a close, could you tell me something you want to do or do more of in 2021?

LB: Obviously, I’d love to do more actual DJing in front of crowds. I’m also learning to play the piano, martial arts, and trying to make more beats.

We wish you the best and look forward to cheering you on from black belt ceremony, to piano recital, and hopefully soon, your next gigs!
